The Longonjo rare earth deposit is located adjacent to the Lobito Railway Corridor, approximately 60 km west of the provincial capital of Huambo, in central Angola.
The project currently under development comprises an open pit mine, concentration and recovery facilities for the miner, tailings storage facility (designed to fulfil the requirements of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management), processing water supply, bulk power supply, mine infrastructure, workshops, offices, accommodation yard, recreational facilities and other associated infrastructure.
The Longonjo operation will extract, concentrate, calcine and chemically refine the free excavation material to produce a high-value mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC), which will be transported by rail over a distance of 273 kilometres to the Atlantic port of Lobito for export.

The construction and operation of the Longonjo mine and processing plant will be allied to ESG best practices, including alignment with the performance standards of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and designed together with the development of a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) from the start of the process.
Pensana’s commitment is to develop the lowest carbon footprint for rare earths based on low-carbon solar energy and access to hydroelectric power.
As part of the commitment to local communities, community engagement has been carried out throughout the progression of the project, with a focus on training for operational readiness and prioritising local employment, providing long-term economic gains for the affected communities.
Longonjo has convenient access to the sealed national road and the Lobito Corridor railway line, both of which pass about 5 km from the project area.
In addition, the mine is strategically located close to the national grid connected to the 2GW Laúca hydroelectric system, which currently extends as far as Caála, located 45 kilometres east of Longonjo.
